Setup

How do I set up Meterkat?
  1. Make sure Claude Code and/or the Codex CLI are installed and signed in on your Windows or Linux computer. Running claude or codex once in a terminal confirms that.
  2. Download the companion for your system from the download section.
  3. Windows: open PowerShell in the download folder and run .\meterkat-companion-…-windows-x64.exe setup.
Linux: tar -xzf meterkat-companion-…-linux-x64.tar.gz, then ./meterkat setup.
  4. Setup checks your AI tools, installs itself for your user only (no administrator rights), asks whether it should start with your computer and finally shows a QR code.
  5. Install Meterkat from Google Play and scan the QR code.
Windows says "Windows protected your PC"

The companion is not code-signed yet, so SmartScreen does not know it. Choose More info → Run anyway. If you want to check the file first, compare Get-FileHash <file> with the SHA256SUMS file of the release.

Does the companion need to run all the time?

Only while you want fresh numbers. If you agreed to autostart during setup, it starts when you sign in. Change that with meterkat autostart install or meterkat autostart remove. While the computer is off, the phone shows the last numbers and marks them as outdated.

Which AI tools and plans are supported?

Claude Code (Claude subscription plans) and the Codex CLI (ChatGPT plans). Both report a 5-hour and a weekly limit. Accounts that pay per API call have no such limits, so Meterkat shows them as unavailable. Antigravity is planned.

Pairing

How do I pair another phone, or get a new QR code?

Run meterkat pair on the computer. Each code works once and expires after 5 minutes; a new code replaces the previous one. Up to 10 phones can be paired with one computer.

The app says the code expired or was already used

Run meterkat pair again and scan the new code. After five wrong attempts a code is blocked for safety.

Why can't I type the code by hand?

The QR code or link also carries the encryption key for your data. Typing a short code would not transport the key, so pairing works only through the QR code or the link. If you can't scan, the companion's pairing page has a link you can open on the phone.

The app asks me to pair again

This happens when the phone was disconnected, the companion was deleted or re-registered, or its encryption key was renewed (meterkat rotate-key). Run meterkat pair and scan the new code.

Numbers and refresh

The widget shows old numbers or "Updating"

Android refreshes widgets roughly every 15 minutes and may wait longer to save battery. Open the app and tap refresh for an immediate update. Numbers older than 5 minutes are marked as outdated. Check that the companion is running (meterkat inspect) and that the computer is online. "Updating" after a reset time means the new value has not been reported yet.

A provider shows "sign-in required" or "unavailable"

Open the tool (claude or codex) on the computer and sign in again. Very old versions of Claude Code don't offer the usage report; update it.

Why are the numbers different from the website?

Meterkat shows exactly what the official tool reports at the time of the last sample. The provider's website may round differently or refresh at another time.

Deleting your data

Remove one phone

In the app choose Disconnect this phone. This removes the phone's access on the relay and deletes the local data. From the computer: meterkat devices lists phones, meterkat revoke <device-id> removes one, meterkat revoke removes all.

Delete everything on the relay

Run meterkat delete on the computer. It deletes your source, all paired phones and the stored encrypted update on the relay right away, and removes the local key and credentials. Sources without any upload for 90 days are deleted automatically, and a stored update disappears after 72 hours without a new one.

Can I get my data back after deleting?

No. There is no account and no copy of your key, so deletion is final. Run meterkat setup again to start fresh.

Uninstalling

Uninstall the companion
  1. meterkat delete (removes relay data, see above).
  2. meterkat autostart remove
  3. Delete the program: Windows %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Meterkat\, Linux ~/.local/bin/meterkat.
  4. Delete the state folder if it is still there: Windows %LOCALAPPDATA%\meterkat, Linux ~/.local/state/meterkat.
Uninstall the app

Disconnect first (see above), then uninstall Meterkat like any app. Uninstalling deletes everything on the phone. Without disconnecting, the phone's access entry stays on the relay until the source is deleted.

Privacy and security

Can the relay operator see my usage?

No. Updates are encrypted on your computer (AES-256-GCM) with a key the relay never receives. The relay sees only technical data such as upload times and sizes. Details are in the privacy policy.

Does Meterkat see my Claude or ChatGPT password?

No. The companion only asks the already signed-in tools for their usage report. Sign-in data stays with those tools.

I lost a phone that was paired

Run meterkat revoke to cut off relay access for all phones, then meterkat rotate-key so the lost phone's key no longer works for new updates, and pair your other phones again.

Can I use my own relay?

Advanced users who operate a compatible relay can enter its address in the app's advanced pairing options and pass --relay <address> to meterkat setup. Most people should use the hosted relay.
